This question "What do Artists Do?" is posted on our GBLUES studio board with a list of artistic behaviors that we consider while engaged in our art making. As I reflect on ways to best serve our learners and families in these interesting times I thought a video for all of the families might give everyone some insight regarding how we roll in the GBLUES studio and how we can do this at home.
Over the past 7 years I have been working towards a way to provide more choice in for the students and still help to develop skills. Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) has become a big part of how I have shifted away from "cookie cutter" projects with the students and now try to provide opportunities for us to create original art. I honestly can't say I have gone full TAB with all of the elementary grades and I still love doing some skill building with very guided art lessons. . . however what has shifted is that we discuss why we are doing things a particular way. With this sudden emergency remote learning we have the opportunity to build much more choice into the art experiences and share in a whole new format :) There are SO many cool resources, artists, concepts, themes, materials, and tutorials out there and what I hope this opportunity can provide is a way for all of us to learn how incredible the wide world of ART can be!

It is unreal how quickly we have had to completely change our normal ways of experiencing life together. I wish I had taken in a bit more of the moments that last Friday and talked with students more about some of the potential ways we could still connect and create if we were not able to come into to school. Since then my mind has been racing with ideas, challenges, and how to best provide an opportunity to connect through art and have some fun doing it. On Sunday I kept having those familiar feelings of preparing for the 1st day of school. Will this be fun for the students? How can I ensure that there is choice in the process? How can I help cultivate curiosity and offer ideas to enrich that sense of wonder we all have? These are just a few of the questions I keep asking myself when trying to design a way to share information with you, build connections, and make the best out of a situation that is beyond our control.
What we can control is our mindset and how this first week plays out depend A LOT on what type of mindset we choose to have. Let's be real... this is a far from ideal way to experience art in school! Not everyone has materials lying around, but what we do all have is the opportunity to think outside the box. So... I will keep researching, posting new things, connecting, and reflecting on how to make this as fun, meaningful, and engaging as possible! One of my new art challenges is to start making my own videos (yikes) and sharing them with the world... stay tuned it should be interesting :) |
